Dear Mentor,

The term is now about to end. As the term is about to end we, students, are expected to have achieved the desired learning results (DLR) or the goals and objectives of Englcom indicated in the syllabus. I think that the e-portfolio itself is the most evident evidence that I could provide to prove that I have indeed achieved the DLR.  It could prove my achievement mainly because I was able to write the two essays we were expected to make and I was able to have progress during the process as seen in the compilation of my works.
The DLR that I found most difficult was LO1. This is because during the time I was accomplishing LO1, everything was new to me. I was not used to using outlines, because we weren’t trained to use them in our high school. Even though I unconsciously had made outlines whenever I write, it still felt new to me having to write an outline and see it in front my eyes. I wasn’t used to writing essays as well, since we focused more on creative writing during my high school days. I wasn’t used to writing many words that were more than 500 words. I was very much overwhelmed when I first heard that we were supposed to write an essay that has a minimum of 1000 words. Everything was new. Even to the component of thee essay which I had to do a thorough research on.
Even when I was new to all these, I had to do my best. I tried all the things that I had to do. Writing an outline, doing research on the topic, making an essay that composed of more than a thousand words all these I tried. Coping up with all these unfamiliar things was hard for a first timer like me, but with the will to accomplish what I had to do I was able to accomplish the task. Even if it wasn’t as good as it was supposed to be, I did it.
My essay entitled “What Do You Think?” would be the essay I am most proud of. Mainly because when I was doing the essay everything just fell in to place. With the experience from the first essay everything went smoothly. I had been able to avoid some mistakes that I had committed in the first one such as using of contractions. Mostly, because I didn’t have a really hard time like I used to be and I think it came out nicely.
I think every activity that had been done during the class had all been really helpful in achieving my personal goals in Englcom.
Blogging had been helpful in developing my reading and writing skills. I think it helped most in my writing. Since, it would be practically seen by anyone I had a conscious that had always reminded me to write better. I didn’t want anyone to see a crappy work, even when they don’t know that it was me writing. That reason alone had made me more conscious every time I write. I think it served as a pressure that made me work better.
During the course of writing I learned many weaknesses of mine in terms of writing. It really helped me because noticing one’s wrong doings is really something that would make improvement. I learned how to make an outline and do research for the topic. I learned to find reliable sources and not just use whatever I see first. During the revisions I spelled out the contractions, tried my best in making correct citations, and many more.
This writing course had helped me familiarize in many things that were new to me when it comes to writing. It had been a very meaningful experience.
Thank you for the guidance that you had given me during the course.

Sincerely yours,
Dream

In addition to the RH Bill another controversial bill was introduced to the Philippines. It is the House Bill 1799 or better known as the Divorce Bill. The Divorce Bill is simply about legalizing divorce in our country. Following the legalization of divorce in Malta, Philippines is now the only country in the world that has not legalized divorce. As the issue regarding the implementation of the Divorce Bill raises, the masses were divided into two groups: those who agree to the implementation of the Divorce Bill and those who don’t. Divorce Bill does not only result to bad things; it can also result to good things that make me agree to the implementation of the Divorce Bill.
Before taking a stand it in an issue, it is important to first define the meaning of the term and then weigh the pros and cons.  According to the Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary, divorce is defined as the action or instance of legally dissolving of a marriage. So, the legalization of the Divorce Bill will be giving the people a chance to legally separate and legally dissolve their marriage.
Currently in the Philippines there are already three ways to end a marriage legally. It is either through annulment, declaration of nullity or legal separation. (Festin, 2011)With these three options existing people still wanted the implementation of divorce simply because these three options are flawed. In an annulment the marriage would not be recognized by the law and would be considered as it had never existed. But this is not the only reason why an annulment is not good enough for the people. An annulment can only be obtained under circumstances where the there was no parental consent for those who are above 18 years old and below 21; when the marriage was conducted while one of the party is not in a sound mind to understand what is happening, when the marriage happened by fraud or by force; when one party is found to have STD that is serious and incurable; when one of the party is discovered to have impotence or physical incapacity which does not cover one being infertile meaning this would not account to an annulment. Another reason to why annulment is not good enough is that to prove that one is physically incapable would require check-ups from experts which would cause a lot of money that most Filipinos could not afford. (Santos, 2011) In a declaration of nullity it is almost the same as an annulment which denies the existence of the marriage from the beginning, but in this type of separation there is another set of basis for the petition to be filed. In filling a declaration of nullity only reason such as minority, lack of authority of solemnizing officer, absence of marriage license, bigamous or polygamous marriage, mistake in identity, failure to record with appropriate registry, incestuous marriage, void by reason of public policy, and psychological incapacity are considered for a petition of  declaration of nullity. Both kind of separation would make the child illegitimate since the marriage would not be recognized by the law. In order to avoid making a child illegitimate there is the legal separation. This is also a solution to problems such as being abused, being corrupted or induced to engage in prostitution or connivance, having the correspondent imprisoned for more than 6 years after the final judgement, having a drug addict or alcoholism partner, having a homosexual partner, being in a bigamous marriage, having a sexual infidel or pervert partner, having one’s live being threatened, and being abandoned with no cause for more than a year. The three choices that were given to legally end a marriage solves almost all the possible problems that may occur making them sound good enough, but what makes it short is that in legal separation one is not entitled to remarry. (Fred, 2007) The Divorce Bill covers all these concerns.
Another argument against this is that the introduction of the Divorce Bill would make the divorce rate in the country high. Contrary to this argument, there are data that show low divorce rates even if people are allowed to get a divorce. As shown in “Maps of the World” (2006), some of these counties are Mongolia with 0.38, Georgia with 0.36 and Libya with only 0.24 per 1000 people.
In line with the argument that it will make the divorce rate high, the introduction of the Divorce Bill is said to weaken family ties and would cause harm to the children. If the Divorce Bill weakens family ties then how is it that the divorce rates in some countries maintain low? These low rates on divorce are also evidences of strong family ties and of people who would not easily go to the option of filling a divorce. Those who proposed the divorce has also given thought to control the divorce rate and therefore would set standards for the divorce to pass. In case the divorce is passed and married couples are permitted to separate, those people who are anti-divorce bill will argue that it would harm the children. If the children were to stay in a house where the parents would continue to fight would it not cause harm to the children as well? If one party were to be abusive of the other would the children be unharmed emotionally? If one party gets more abusive and decides to hit the children as well is there no harm caused? When these kinds of things happen in the family, is it not better for the parents to separate for the good of the children?
Some people think that divorce could make the people involved unhealthy because they do not have partners that they could talk to. Since humans are naturally social animals it is expected that humans who have someone to talk to would have a healthier mind and have the initiative to have a healthy body as well. If there were always fights in the house, would the people there still be able to communicate properly and be in a healthy condition? Instances were one will be abusive of the other; one of them is surely in an unhealthy condition, is it not?
Regarding the implementation of the Divorce Bill the most important question is perhaps about the financial condition. Most families in the Philippines have their fathers work and mothers stay at home watching the kids. After the divorce, the mother who has no work would surely have a problem in getting even the basic needs for living. This problem is also covered by the divorce bill. In the bill proposed, the one who is working is entitled to support the jobless one until he or she is able to get a job. To be able to prevent the abuse of leeching of the partner, this support is only valid until one year after the divorce is made final.
The Divorce Bill that is being proposed covers all the possible problems that would be encountered by a married couple and has the solutions to the problems that were raised regarding the implementation of it. Those who proposed the bill had definitely given the issue a thorough view and gave the best possible solutions to it. Those people who agree to the Divorce Bill are not necessarily in favour of people getting divorce because of the little things, but they agree to it simply because they wanted to give chances to those who are in failed marriages that cannot anymore bear with the problems growing because of the failure. It is giving a chance for them to have a new and better life. Let us all be unselfish and think more of those who are suffering. Do not just disagree to the implementation of the bill and take consideration of what are being proposed, because after reading the things that are proposed one might just change his idea regarding the topic. One just might agree to the implementation of the bill after reading both the pros and cons.

Simple Things Can Amount To Happiness

 Outline
Thesis statement:  happiness is something you feel because of certain happenings in your life that had given you warmth.
I.                   Introduction
A.    Quotation
B.     Thesis statement
II.                Body
A.    Scholarly definition
B.     own definition
C.     examples of simple happiness based on experience
D.    examples of simple happiness based on other people’s experience
III.             conclusion
A.    obtain happiness in small, non-materialistic way
B.     “the best things in life are free”

As of now, to some people happiness is no longer a generic feeling  that we feel when something good happens to us. Rather it is now more often referred to as a feeling associated with satisfaction by obtaining something that we really want. People have become more and more materialistic nowadays; they focus more on concrete things such as gadgets or having various properties, which eventually leads to the thinking that happiness is to be attained by means of money. There is a saying that says “Money can not buy you happiness.” Today there are some people who might argue that this is not true. They would share about the times where they had felt happy through gaining things that they had wanted.  The question now is “Did the feeling last? How long did it last?” They might have felt happy at that moment of time where they had got hold of the thing they had wanted. But think about it, after that time being thrilled with owning somthing they had wanted, do they experience again the joy that they felt during the moment whenever they remember? I think not. Thus, money can give happiness but it only lasts for a short period of time, it is only a temporary happiness.
Compared to gaining happiness through materialism, I think there is a much better way of obtaining happiness that could last for a longer time if not forever. It is obtaining happiness through things we experience, which may sometimes be small enough that people fail to notice them, but when they remember them those times, they would have a happy feeling. Gaining happiness through experiences would make the happy feeling last longer than obtaining it through materialistic ways.
Happiness is a very abstract idea, but humans as intelligent species has given it a definition.
According to Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary, happiness is defined as a state of well-being and contentment. It could also mean a pleasurable or satisfying event.(2012)It is as simple as that, but it seems so hard to obtain. This may be because of how people would define happiness. Some might say being able to have power and riches, which may be hard for some people to acquire, would be the answer to happiness. But there are still people who are unhappy in spite of their wealth and power one example of this is Shi Huangdi, the first chinese emperor to be able to unify China. Being able to conquer much of China and be the only emperor of China during the time, entitled him as a rich person and the most powerful person in China during the time. Despite this he still was not happy with what he had, he became greedy and wanted more in his life making him unhappy. This case proved that what seemed to be the answer of an individual may not be true to the other; the definition of happiness varies from one to another. To me happiness is something that could easily be obtained and does not need money to achieve it; it could as well be something that we find in our everyday lives, but just fail to notice.
I remember a time when I felt so happy; it was when I got sick. I did not know the reason why I got sick. My vision suddenly went blurry and I felt my head spinning. I started to vomit. My mom was very worried so she consulted our physician immediately. I heard her talking over the phone. Her worried tone was all that had given me the warmth and happiness regardless of the state I was in. She took care of me for the whole night and she was there to attend to my needs. Just seeing how she cared so much made me feel like I was the happiest person in the world at that moment.
To others it might seem so shallow to say that I am the happiest person in the world just because of that little thing, but to me it was not shallow at all. It was the truth. Every time I would remember the incident, I would be really happy.
I think that the answer to the question whether or not happiness is hard or easy to acquire just depends on the person who defines it. It is just like the saying “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” But in this case saying that “Happiness is in the eye of the beholder,” would be much more appropriate. To me, anything in this world that is abstract can only be defined by the one who sees it, thus making it have a varying meaning to each person.
Happiness is something I felt with an experience. To the brother of the author of the article “Where Happiness Comes From” (2012),  it is like having many old cars and trucks that he could fix the engines or learn how it functions by himself. In the case of the author herself, there are many things about the farm that made her happy which she cited them all in the text from the times when she ran in the fields, played in the corn fields,  to the times where she swam pretending to be the mermaid in the ocean. These were the times that made her happy. According to the article: “Graduation Speech: Happiness is Success” simply attaining the plans that been had set would make the author happy. (2012)
As shown above, the things that made a person happy may vary.  One thing that is common in the examples of what makes these people happy is that all the examples does not have anything to do with money. They are considered as the simplest things in life that some people just take advantage of,  but these things have made these people happy. These things have proven that happiness isn’t necessarily associated with money. Happiness could be attained by the simplest things life. I once saw a quote by Coco Chanel online that says, “The best things in life are free, the second best are very expensive.” This quote suited well enough to the idea that happiness is best attained by something that is priceless but meaningful enough to give the person experiencing it the feeling of joy that would be well remembered by the person who experienced it.

Simple Things Can Amount To Happiness (draft)

Nowadays happiness is no longer the feeling you get when something good happens to you. It is now more often referred to as a feeling felt when you are being satisfied by obtaining something that you really want. People have become more materialistic nowadays; they focus more on concrete things such as gadgets, which eventually leads to the thinking that it could be attained by means of money. They would tell you about the times that they got something that they really wanted had given them happiness; the question now is “Did the feeling last?” They may be happy about it when it was still new, but once it got old did it still give them the same happiness? I think not. Money can give you happiness but it only lasts for a short period of time.
Compared to gaining happiness through materialism, I think there is a much better way of obtaining happiness that could last forever. It is obtaining happiness through things you experience, which may sometimes be small enough that you fail to notice them, but when you remember them you would have a happy feeling sprouting inside you. Gaining happiness through experiences would make the happy feeling last longer than the happiness obtained through materialism that only gives you temporary happiness.
Up to this point of the essay you might wonder what exactly happiness is.
According to dictionary.reference.com (2009), happiness is simply the quality or state of being happy. It is as simple as that, but it seems so hard to obtain. This may be because of how people would define happiness. Some might say being able to have power and riches, which is may be hard for some people to acquire, would be the answer to happiness. But there are still people who are unhappy in spite of their wealth and power like King Midas. Even with the golden touch and the authority of a king didn’t make him happy. This case proved that what seemed to be the answer of an individual may not be true to the other; the definition of happiness varied from one to another. To me happiness is something that could easily be obtained and doesn’t need money to achieve it; it could as well be something that we find in our everyday lives, but just fail to notice.

Every time that I would remember the incident I would be really happy and would feel a rush of warmth spreading through my whole body.
I think that the answer to the question whether or not happiness is hard or easy to acquire just depends on the person who defines it. It is just like the saying “Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.” but in this case saying that “Happiness is in the eyes of the beholder.” would be much more appropriate. See, the things that made a person happy varies; one thing that is common in the examples of what makes these people happy is that they didn’t have anything to do with money. They are considered as the simplest things in life that some people just take advantage of, but to the people mentioned above or to the people that had experienced happiness through these simple things it will be something that they will always remember and keep close in their hearts because these things that seemed so simple to other people had now meant something more to them. These are things which have proven that happiness isn’t necessarily associated with money. Happiness could be attained by the simplest things life. I once saw a quote by Coco Chanel online that says, “The best things in life are free, the second best are very expensive.”  I couldn’t agree more with the quote. Till here I think I may conclude that if we want to attain happiness at its best, then it could only be by something that is priceless but meaningful enough to bring happiness that would be well remembered by the person experiencing it.
